NAME ORIGIN: Named after the Frogmore Estate in England located next to Windsor Castle, where Queen Victoria is buried along with Edward VII and his American wife Wallis Simpson. Originally there was a frog pond at the foot of this hillside property, from which local children caught pollywogs in the spring. In winter, the pond was also used for skating parties in the early days and ice hockey in later years. HISTORY: The property was originally granted to Loyalist George Sproule in 1783.The property changed hands over the years and was gradually reduced in size to about five acres, bounded by York, Regent and Albert Streets and the railroad tracks on the north. Lumber baron Ashley Colter lived in the grand house, which was divided into three units to accommodate his extended family. After Dundonald Street was extended to bisect the property, building lots were subdivided off, with Ashley’s grandson David acquiring the large western lot to build his family home. This house was replaced with the current apartment building, known as Frogmore Estates.
